th, rh. Эти написания являются этимологическими. Придыхание, свойственное некоторым древнегреческим согласным, передавалось в латинском языке посредством буквы h.

Так возникли буквосочетания ch, ph, th, rh, употребляемые и во французской орфографии. В сочетаниях th, rh буква h нисколько не влияет на произношение t и r, поэтому нет фонетического обоснования для его написания.

th пишется во многих греческих корнях. В старинных заимствованиях в русском языке греческое th отражалось в виде звука [ф] (писалась фита). Поэтому можно руководствоваться следующим правилом: если французскому t в русском языке соответствует ф, то следует писать th: arithmétique 'арифметика’, orthographe 'орфография’, cathédral 'кафедральный’ и т. д., в том числе многие собственные имена Athènes 'Афины’, Théodore 'Федор’, Marthe 'Марфа’ и т. д. Однако если в русском языке звучит т, то это ничего не говорит об орфографии французского слова, так как русское т может отражать и греческое t, и греческое th в словах, пришедших к нам через западноевропейские языки: théâtre 'театр’;

th пишется и в некоторых словах, заимствованных из германских и восточных языков:
